The adrenal glands and system is a very important part of the body as it is responsible for producing the hormones that control other body systems. This can include the metabolism, weight loss or gain, changes in body characteristics and even differences in fertility. These glands, located on the top of the kidneys, work in balance with other glands in the body as well as in the brain.
Most patients will suspect an adrenal problem as the root cause of health issues. It is typically a referral to an adrenal doctor by the family physician. Often the symptoms of problems with the adrenal glands are a challenge to diagnose as they can mimic other diseases and conditions.
Some of the most common health issues treated by an adrenal doctor include:
- Cushing’s disease – increase in weight, fatty deposits in the neck and back, muscle weakness and easily damaged bones, high blood pressure and changes in women’s menstrual cycles can all be traced back to the overproduction of hormones in the adrenal glands.
- Tumors – a tumor in an adrenal gland, known as a pheochromocytoma, will cause over protection of adrenaline and noradrenaline, leading to problems in controlling blood pressure and heart rate.
- Addison’s disease – underproduction of hormones is found with this disease that is noted by the darkening of the skin, weight decrease, weakness and extreme fatigue and digestive and blood sugar complications.
It is very important to talk to your general physician if there is a history in your family of adrenal gland related conditions. Also, make sure to report all symptoms you are experiencing, even if they may seem slight or less problematic.
The adrenal doctor will complete very specific tests that can determine if the symptoms are a result of hormonal imbalances through the adrenal glands. Treatment can then be recommended to bring balance back to the body and eliminate or effectively manage the symptoms.
