Downtown Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge was inhabited by Native Americans from as early as 12000 BCE. The city received its name from a red pole that marked the boundary between the Houma and Bayagoula tribes. Members of a French expedition in 1698 were the first Europeans to spot the pole. The first European settlement was a military and trading post established by the French in 1721. The area was settled by various European immigrants and former slaves. It has been under the control of the French, British, Spanish, Confederate States of America, and United States. So, when you walk around Baton Rouge, you will see a lot of different eras and influences.
