There are some people in Chicagoland and around the rest of our country who adopt a motor vehicle owning policy of “I will only buy an American automobile and will never own or drive any foreign vehicle”. In some instances, this is a bit strange when you consider the current state of multi-nationalism in many things – including automobile manufacture. The old and true American brand name might turn out to have had its engine made in Europe, Australia or Japan and its main bodywork pressed in South America with many of the other components sourced worldwide. Conversely, a so called import or foreign made automobile might well have come off the production line at a factory within the United States. Unless you do a lot of research, it can be difficult to be sure exactly where many new vehicles were really made.
That being as it may; I do not recollect anyone (other than employees of an overseas car company) saying that they will only buy and drive an imported vehicle. American automobiles will probably forever maintain predominance in our own domestic market; but, more and more people are now thinking along the lines of selecting a new vehicle based on their own judgment calls as to what they wish to do with that vehicle combined with the appeal of its appearance and fuel efficiency; plus of course, a price that is within their personal budget.
Maybe Japanese?
Choices that are made on this basis can often turn out to be in favor of Japanese models. Toyota, Nissan and Honda will be high on such a list along with less popular makes like Subaru and Mazda. We tend to forget that the Japanese automobile industry is not much younger than our own. The last manufacturer’s name on the afore mentioned list, when Romanized out of its Japanese script is actually “Matsuda Kabushiki-gaisha” and the company was founded by a Jujiro Matsuda in 1920 and its name (in English) was Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd with production facilities in Hiroshima, Japan. They changed their name in 1927 to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd and made their first automobile in 1931 (a three wheeled autorickshaw).
