A data center rack is sometimes called a server rack. It is a central and critical component of all data centers. This is a specially designed steel rack that is used to hold servers and associated hardware components. These racks can be secured and isolated, which is often the case in colocation areas of the data center, or they can be placed in sequence for main server housing and storage needs.

The Design

Most people are aware that servers generate a lot of heat when they are operating. To prevent overheating, data centers are maintained at a specific cool temperature to dissipate heat and optimize server performance and life cycle.

A data center rack is designed to allow air circulation for effective environmental control of the temperature of the air around the server. In addition to servers, most of these racks are also designed to be configured to hold telecom equipment, battery backup systems (uninterruptible power supplies) as well as other types of equipment used in data centers.

Most of the top data center racks also have the option to manage cables and cords. The cables and cords can be bundled and secured to the rack, reducing the risk of damage to these essential pieces of equipment.

Colocation Services

Businesses using colocation services to host their servers will use the data center rack or racks provided. In these colocation areas, the racks may actually be set up in vaults, which are highly secure areas. In these situations, access to the servers is restricted through codes, swipe card access, or sometimes multiple-factor authentication for additional security.

Web Werks provides colocation services with customized data center racks and services. To learn more about colocation at our data centers, see us at www.webwerks.in.
