Visiting a dentist can be scary. This is true whether you are a child of two or a full grown adult. It is something that many people, including dentists, have to work to overcome. For a dentist, it is important for them to shake off the bad image. For clients, it is essential they truly see what happens during a visit to the dentist.

Before That First Dental Visit

Before you step through the door for examination and/or treatment, it is important you visit the dental office. You need to look at the premises. Talk to the receptionist. Talk to the dentist. It is important you feel:
* Comfortable in the office and with the dentist and his or her staff
* As relaxed as possible
* Confidant the dentist is a professional and an expert in his field
* He or she is listening to your concerns and can alleviate your fears
Make sure the waiting room is clean and the reception is cheerful. She or he must know what they are doing. How do they handle your requests? How do they treat the patients arriving or any emergencies? If this is the right dentist for you, arrange for your first visit.

That All Important First Dentist Visit
Before you meet your dentist in the awe inspiring chair, he, she or an assistant is most likely to take down a complete history of your oral and physical health. You will then move on to the actual reason for your visit. If it is your first visit, it will involve a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth and gums. The point is to identify current and potential problems such as cavities, gum disease, and other oral problems.
While most visits to a dentist may be a simple check-up, they can also involve any of the following procedures:
* Teeth cleaning: These are given by either a dentist or a dental hygienist. Its purpose is to remove any build up of tartar or plaque.
* X-rays: If you are of a certain age, or there are questions concerning the condition of your teeth, a dentist may recommend you have x-rays taken. By doing so, he or she may hope to uncover a problem before it becomes serious.
You need to take good care of your teeth. They need to last you a lifetime. By becoming comfortable with your dentist and trusting your teeth to his professional services, you will go a long way towards preserving your teeth. So, if you want to retain that smile, it only makes sense that you work with him, or her to establish a long term and easy relationship.
