A few different tests are available to check whether someone has been infected with the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The two main categories are diagnostic and antibody tests. Covid-19 MDX RT-PCR is a diagnostic version that detects viral genetic material.
Diagnostic Products
Molecular diagnostic tests identify genetic material, whereas antigen versions detect viral surface proteins. The Covid-19 MDX RT-PCR product is the first type. These both identify or rule out an active infection. A positive result informs the individual that quarantining is essential to prevent viral spread.
Antibody Versions
In contrast, antibody tests check for substances the immune system makes in response to an infection. These products can identify an active infection, but they are not used for this purpose. That’s because antibodies might not develop for weeks after the infection has run its course. The tool is useful for showing whether a person had been infected previously.
Molecular and Antigen Products
Molecular tests are generally more accurate than antigen versions, also called rapid tests. Those detecting genetic material are usually processed in a lab, but antigen versions can be processed in a pharmacy, a person’s home, or other locations. People often choose these products because of the convenience and fast results.
Typically, testing for antigens should be done twice, with the second performed at least 24 hours after the first. If the infection is very new, the first result could be negative.
Strong Demand
Manufacturers have responded to the strong demand for these products in the midst of a pandemic with no end in sight. Information on one COVID-19 test provider can be found at Project Bioshield.
