If you are not sure what to use start with try a medium which is gentle. Steel shot or steel grit works well for anything with special finishes. Though it is softer than the aluminum oxide, it is going to leave etched surfaces which make it easier for the paint to adhere.
Dry ice is a newer method which you can use and it works by taking compact dry ice pellets and shooting them out with compressed air. It works well for electromechanical equipment, electrical installations, and to clean other machinery as well as other surfaces which any residue from sandblasting would cause issues.
