Tanning salons are the ideal solution for adding color to your skin, especially if you want to wear shorts or a swimsuit and it’s still early in the season. Although most tanning salons provide you with proper instructions for using a tanning bed or booth, only the best will give you first-hand information about how to make the most of your time in a tanning bed. There are several things you should do to get your body ready before going to a tanning salon, so here are a few tips to help you make sure you get the best possible tan.

Exfoliate and Moisturize

One of the most common reasons why it may take longer to tan is because your skin is not prepared correctly. Dry skin basically fights the rays of the tanning bed, so you will need to tan more often in order to achieve even a base tan. Before going to tanning salons,it is important you shower and exfoliate in order to remove all of the dead skin. For the best results, exfoliate your skin about one hour before tanning. The better conditioned your skin is, the better your tan will be, so you should apply moisturizer at least twice a day. It is best to apply moisturizer when you get out of the shower and again at bedtime. If your skin is excessively dry, then apply a good moisturizer several times throughout the day.

Speed Up the Tanning Process

There are several products available which will allow you to get a deeper tan more quickly. Most tanning salons have several bronzers to choose from, which will allow you to tan quicker. A bronzer works by combining ingredients which slightly dye your skin (temporarily) and help you tan at the same time. A tanning accelerator also works quickly and you will be able to see color in your skin after a short period of time. Most people prefer to use an accelerator for a few visits and then switch to a bronzer, which will give you a deeper tan.

One of the most common mistakes people make when they go to tanning salons is thinking if they stay in the tanning bed longer, they will tan quicker. This is not how your skin works. The pigments in your skin must be ready to absorb that much UV exposure, so you have to gradually build up your time in order to prevent burning. Start with a low tanning time, usually about 3 to 5 minutes for at least a week, and then increase your time by 1 minute until you are comfortable and reach the maximum time allotted in the specific tanning bed or booth.
