Designing your own t shirt is not always as easy as many people think. What may seem like an inspired idea for a great t-shirt design may actually not translate into a great graphic concept.

By taking your time, thinking about the big picture, and carefully evaluating what you want to say, you can create a wonderful t-shirt design. Unfortunately, designs aren’t carefully planned out most of the times, and therefore the results (in the shirts) simply don’t get the message across, or the shirts just don’t look at all like what you wanted.

The Size

The size of the design is a very important element in t shirt design. A design that is too small is going to be difficult to see and may look almost lost on the t-shirt depending on the colors and other features of the shirt.

On the other hand, a design that is too large can look overwhelming, especially on the smaller sized shirts. The process of choosing the design size should start with considering where you are going to place it on the shirt, and then looking for a good balance.

For placement of large or complex designs, the upper front and back are the most logical options, typically centered for maximum effect. For smaller designs and logos, offsetting them over the right or left breast pocket area is always a popular choice.

The Colors

Depending on your choice of colors in your design or in your message, as well as of the colors of shirts you are going to use, you will want to try different printing options. There is direct to garment printing, which is a great idea as the ink is actually absorbed by the shirt.

For fewer colors, and for really large quantities of shirts, you can also choose screen printing. This is a lower cost printing option, but there will be minimum order requirements for printing.

The Message

The message on your t shirt design should be clear and legible; this means choosing a color, size, and font that is going to stand out. For light colored shirts, a dark font provides the best contrast, while for dark colored shirts, white or light colors are a natural choice.

Before you submit a t shirt design for printing, it is well worth double checking the sizing, fonts, and color choices. Remember that the printing company is going to print what you submit and request. They don’t edit or change anything, so you want to make sure you get it right before you place your order.
