The first thing most people will notice about you is the condition of your smile. Over the years, your smile may begin to diminish. There are some dental problems that can cause you to lose teeth. Rather than having to deal with the problems these missing teeth can cause, you will need to see about getting dental implants. These implants look and feel just like real teeth, which is why they are an ideal option for people with severe dental issues. Here are some of the things you need to do when trying prepare for dental implant installation.

Find Out If a Bone Graft is Needed

If there is not enough bone where your implants need to be attached, then you may have to undergo a bone graft. Generally, the implant dentist performing this procedure will want to do this graft months in advance. By doing this, the implant dentist can ensure there is sufficient time for healing before the new implants are put in.

Avoiding Food and Drink Before the Procedure

Often times, an implant dentist will want to sedate you when going in for this type of procedure. When receiving sedatives for a surgery, you will need to avoid eating and drinking a few hours before the actual procedure begins. Once your surgery is over, you will need to have a friend or family member there to drive you home. You will probably still be a bit groggy due to the anesthesia you were given for surgery, which is why having someone do the driving for you is wise.

Plan For Aftercare

Before the dental implant surgery, you will need to have an aftercare plan in place. Getting some over the counter painkillers is a great idea. If these do not reduce the pain and discomfort you feel, your implant dentist can prescribe you something a bit stronger.
