Laser hair removal is a great way to remove body hair without dealing with the pain of waxing or the annoyance of shaving on a regular basis. The procedure involves a specially calibrated laser, specifically set to your hair type. It blasts a beam of light directed at the follicle, killing it. This prevents the hair from growing back. It is a popular procedure, with very little risk. Still, it’s important to be informed about any type of treatment you are considering. Here are a few things to know before getting laser hair removal in Chicago.

You Can’t Be Tanned

Most practitioners advise their clients to avoid the sun for approximately four weeks prior to their treatment. The procedure can’t be completed on burnt or even tanned skin, so you will be cautioned to avoid contact with the sun. If you have to spend significant periods of time outside, be sure to carry plenty of sunscreen with you. For those who live outside all summer long, it might be a good idea to consider having the procedure done in the winter months instead.

Shave The Day Before

Unlike waxing, you don’t need to let your hair grow out before having it removed. It’s a good idea to shave the day prior to the procedure, but be sure not to have had a wax in the last few weeks. Waxing removes the hair at the root, leaving very little follicle for the laser to kill. You will find that the laser hair removal treatment is much less effective if you’ve recently waxed.

Be Patient

Unfortunately, you won’t notice results with your very first session, but be patient and stick with the procedure. It can take between four and six sessions before you will see results. Be sure to follow the practitioner’s guidelines and suggestions throughout the duration of the treatment, to ensure it is as effective as possible.
