It is well known that Carrier air conditioners are some of the best in the business, but the history behind them is actually quite rich. Willis Carrier, who would later found the Carrier Corporation, invented the modern air conditioner in 1902. His model included temperature control, humidity control, controlled air circulation, ventilation and an air purifier, making it much different from previous air cooling units.
Starting the Company
For years, Carrier worked for Buffalo Forge Company as an engineer, making improvements to the air conditioning system. His idea that he could he could keep a constant level of humidity by keeping a constant dew point changed the way that the world viewed cooling. At the start of World War I, however, Carrier’s company laid off most of their engineers to focus on manufacturing. The end result was that Carrier and six other engineers pooled their company to create Carrier Engineering Corporation, which would later go on to create Carrier Air Conditioners.
Growing the Business
During the Great Depression, sales slowed down considerably. People could no longer afford luxuries like air conditioning after the Wall Street collapse of 1929 and businesses like Carrier took a hit. Carrier did not give up on his goals, however, and made some deals to ensure that his company remained viable. Eventually, Carrier Engineering Corporation merged with Brunswick-Kroeschell Company along with York Heating and Ventilating Corporation to create a brand new company called Carrier Corporation. Willis Carrier became the chairman of this new organization, which would grow to become one of the most prominent employers in central New York State.
Carrier’s Legacy
Willis Carrier attached his name to every product that his company made because he believed in the quality of these items. His air conditioners were state of the art back in the early 1900s and they remain that way to this day. The company remains at the forefront of developing new technologies for their Carrier air conditioners and making sure that people have the ability to keep their houses cool during the warmest months of the year. Carrier would likely be proud of what his company has done since his death in 1950, as they have grown the industry and their products are found in countless homes all over the country.
