Having hard water in your home can affect your skin’s moisture as well as how well your clothes wash. Dealing with the mineral deposits that hard water can leave behind in your sinks and on your dishes isn’t fun either. In order to maintain the performance of your hard water softening system, it is important to change the filter on a regular basis.

The amount of time allotted between filter changes may depend on the particular

softening system that you have. However, generally, most systems require that the filter be changed every few months. Although manufacturers may make recommendations, if you notice that your water pressure is low, then it may be time to replace the water softener cartridge filter.

Replacing the filter is fairly straightforward if you are a do-it-yourself type of person. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Turn the water off completely off. This means making sure the outlet as well as the inlet valves are turned off.
  2. Press the pressure release button at the top of the filter.
  3. Remove the housing using a pre-filter wrench. Be sure to not lose the O-ring during this process.
  4. Remove the old filter from the housing, then wipe and rinse the housing clean.
  5. Insert the new filter, replace the O-ring and then the housing. You do not need to use a wrench for this, just your hand. Also, adding a little petroleum jelly to the O-ring will help with making sure it is tightly sealed.
  6. Turn the water back on. If no leaks are present, then you are all set.

Proper maintenance of your hard water softening system will ensure that it lasts a long time. Even if it is recommended to change the water softener cartridge filter every six months, you should change your filter as needed in order to achieve the maximum performance.
