If you are like most smokers, you have probably tried to quit using every pill, gum, lozenge and program out there. Yet, there is still one program you may not have tried. One Missouri wellness resort center offers auriculotherapy for smoking. If this doesn’t sound familiar to you it’s because it’s a fairly new approach that smokers can use to stop their nicotine addiction for good. Here is how auriculotherapy for smoking works.

One Part Acupuncture

There are points all over the human body where acupuncture needles or the application of pressure is supposed to help alleviate a physical problem. Auriculotherapy applies this principle using your external ears. Certain pressure points on the ear are used to stop you from craving a cigarette. However, there are no needles or pinch-pressure devices involved.

One Part Shock Therapy and Aversion Therapy

Pavlov discovered that if you condition someone or something (e.g., his dog) to do something (or not do something) in response to a stimulus, he or she would be cured of the behavior. Auricular therapy is also referred to as “ear zapping” because it uses small electrodes to deliver pulses of low voltage of electricity to your ear every time you want to smoke. The aversive effect of a small electric shock connected to picking up a cigarette stops you from smoking. It may take several treatments to get the desired effect, but it has been proven to work.
