A toasty way to heat your home is with a gas fireplace. If you don’t have a chimney and existing fireplace, you can usually get one that’s freestanding that can provide the same amount of heat. When you use a fireplace in your home, there are a few things that you want to do to ensure safety and proper use.
Glass Maintenance
There will likely be a glass door on your traditional gas fireplace. This will keep the flames from spreading in the room and keep any aromas from escaping. However, you need to keep the glass clean so that you can see the flames of the fireplace as this is often a beautiful image and so that you can see if there are any issues with the fireplace itself.
Interior
Although you don’t have to clean the interior of a traditional gas fireplace every time it’s used, you do need to clean it when you notice soot building up or if you notice more debris escaping from the sides of the glass. A small vacuum can be used to clean the interior. You can also use a cloth to wipe down the walls.
Batteries
When you use a gas fireplace, you need to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These two devices can save your life if the pilot light goes out and results in a malfunction or if an abundance of carbon monoxide escapes throughout your home. Check your batteries when you change your clocks during the year as a reminder.
