How Is the Test Performed
You will be given an IV prior to your test. A tracer will be injected into the IV. The tracer will travel through the blood. The radiologist will be able to get a clear view of the heart. You will get this procedure done while you are lying on a table. You will be hooked up to the EKG.
A computer will be used to produce 3-D images. In some cases, the test is performed along with a stress test. The test will take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.
Why Would I Need a Cardiac PET Scan?
A PET scan be used to diagnose cardiac artery disease. It can be used to identify the injured and dead tissue in the heart.
Are There Any Risks Associated With Getting a Cardiac PET scan?
It is safe for you to get a PET scan. You will be exposed to a small amount of radiation. However, your kidneys will naturally excrete the radiation. However, if you are pregnant or nursing, then you will need to let your doctor know before you get this procedure.
What Do I Need to Do to Prepare?
You may be asked to abstain from caffeine for 24 hours before your procedure. You may also be asked to fast for four to six hours before your surgery.
