How does emission inspection works?

If your car is registered in New Jersey, then it must pass an emission’s inspection, also known as a smog check, every two years in order for you to legally operate it.  While many vehicle owners think of the emission’s check as a nuisance, the purpose of the check is to improve air quality by compelling vehicle owners to fix those vehicles causing the most pollution.  While this can be a nuisance for vehicle owners, the reason that the state does inspections is because many people have no warning that there is a problem with their emissions systems.  They may have an intermittent check engine light, but not be aware it is related to an emission problem, but many have no signs at all.  Instead, the first time they realize that they have an emission issue is when they fail a regularly scheduled emission’s inspection.

What does emissions repair involve?  That is a complicated question to answer, because so many different things can cause high hydrocarbon or high carbon monoxide emissions.  These things include, but are not limited to: catalytic converter problems, sensor malfunctions, internal engine problems, leaks in the hoses and vacuums, ignition system malfunctions, fuel injector problems, ignition timing or idle speed problems, the carburetor’s air/fuel mix being at the wrong ratio or having an incorrectly adjusted float level, a defection EGR valve, a defective air injection system, faulty computer controls, restricted air intake systems, misfires, and malfunctions in the evaporative control system.

Fortunately, at Frank’s Auto Repair, we are experts at diagnosis.  We find out why your emission’s system is malfunctioning and then repair that problem.  Once it is diagnosed, our certified automotive technicians fix the problem, not only ensuring that your vehicle passes its emissions inspection, but also improving your car’s performance.
