Even the most reliable and expensive furnaces don’t work properly at times, and often the cost of a simple service call exceeds $100. Before you call in the HVAC experts to revive a struggling furnace, try a little troubleshooting on your own. In fact, many professionals in the heating and cooling industry often suggest that a potential client perform a variety of troubleshooting tasks before they engage the services of an HVAC expert.

Troubleshooting a Residential Furnace

Some of the checks recommended to homeowners by service technicians before they address the furnace repair needs themselves include:

 * Checking the filter for dirt which can affect air flow (This should actually be a regularly scheduled maintenance event; however, many homeowners forget about the filters until there is a problem with the furnace.)
 * Making sure the thermostat is set to “Heat” and increasing the temperature set point to ensure that the unit actually has a reason to turn on
 * Determining whether the thermostat and the furnace itself are getting electrical power (Some thermostats use batteries, so replace them as a troubleshooting task.  Also, set the fan switch on the thermostat to the “On” position, so that if you hear the fan come on, you will know that the system is getting power.)
 * Identifying the breaker that serves the furnace and ensuring that it is not tripped
 * If you have a gas furnace, checking to see if the gas valve is in the “On” position
 * If you have a furnace that is 20 years old or more, checking to see whether the pilot light is out (Follow the instructions in the furnace operation manual if you must relight the pilot.)

Only you can determine your ability to perform troubleshooting tasks, so please attempt only those with which you are comfortable. The idea here is to undertake minor diagnostic efforts requiring no specific technical training, but you will note that the furnace instruction manual is referenced as a guide and could provide additional troubleshooting tips specific to your unit.

Calling in the “Big Guns”

If the furnace malfunction persists after you have performed all of the troubleshooting you are inclined to attempt, reaching out to an expert in furnace repair is advisable.  Your furnace is likely among the most expensive pieces of equipment in your home and well worth the attention of a qualified HVAC professional.
