Dental Crowns in Chicago IL, are placed to cover the teeth and are primarily used for three reasons: aesthetics (changing shape and color), to strengthen or rebuild a damaged tooth, or to support a bridge (when an adjacent tooth is missing). A dental crown consists of a custom-made structure, and therefore mimics the form of the original tooth. Speaking to Dr. Legator Saul Legator DDS can help you determine if this procedure is right for you. The crowns are usually placed in three particular cases:

• When the shape, color and position of the anterior maxillary teeth is not what you like. In this case you can place crowns or porcelain veneers dramatically to improve your smile in a very short time (3-5 weeks).

• When you lose a tooth. This is recommended for health reasons mainly, but also for aesthetic reasons. To avoid having to carve adjacent teeth, a treatment called an implant crown is used.

• If the patient retains the tooth, but the visible part is severely impaired, you can save the tooth by placing a dental crown services over it. An obvious example is for endodontic reasons (the nerve was injured). For this, the dentist first wears down the tooth (the tooth is lowered in both height and thickness to provide a conical shape) in order to subsequently cement a crown on it. The result will be a more strengthened and aesthetic tooth.

Types of dental crowns

Depending on the aesthetic requirements of each patient, there are three main types of crowns:

• Metal crown on porcelain. This kind of crown is formed by a metal cap that completely covers the remaining tooth stump on which the crown will be placed. The metal cap is set with accuracy serving as support, performing aesthetic and dental functions that actually mimics the tooth. They are especially recommended for replacement of fillings due to their high strength.

• Zirconium dental crown. This type of crown is the same as above, except that the metal cap is a zirconium white material that offers better cosmetic results, better mimicking the natural tooth color.

• Lumineers. They are by far the most aesthetic and natural. Your dentist can make this material in both crowns and porcelain veneers. Its translucency and color make them a perfect choice.
