The French have long enjoyed a pride of place when it comes to creating and understanding architectural designs. French doors are a good example of the contribution that they have made to building and design. These doors are created with panes of glass (usually stained or colored) extending across most of its body. They are double doors, opening either inwards but most times outwards. They are especially useful for balconies and patios, as they add a nice feel to the overall design of the building. But, what makes French doors such an amazing addition to a building? Let’s find out.

Ambience

Through the latter half of the nineteenth century, French doors developed a draw that European nobility enjoyed having in their homes. In those days, the doors were built by hand and the carpenters were very meticulous in their ornate designs. The ambience that French doors adds to a building’s interior is akin to being present in a turn-of-the-century upper class European household. Well-designed French doors allow for ease of movement in and out of a balcony, and if an espagnolette bolt is installed, it’s an easy operation as well. French doors have become synonymous with well-designed homes.

Decor

French doors, unlike traditional wooden doors, are much airier and allow for easy passage of light through the door. Stained glass panes (known as ‘lights’) allow for easy movement of light whilst obscuring vision from the outside, maintaining privacy if they are to be mounted off of a bedroom. The easy ingress of light makes the entire building seem lighter because of the added natural illumination. Any room that has French doors installed usually feels a lot cheerier than rooms that are simply adorned with plain doors. As with all French interior designs, the presence of light and how it interacts with the interior elements is important to the overall feeling of the room or rooms in question.

French doors are still considered one of the more sophisticated methods of balcony access, and installing a balcony without one of those seems like a wasted opportunity. Even for house entry, scaled up French doors work very well and add to the outdoor attraction of a building face. Indiana’s residents have only now started embracing the idea of using French doors as an entryway. The impact they make on the front of a building is striking enough so that we may see more of these designs cropping up as time goes on. Visit website for the large collection of French doors.
