Buying a diamond is special not only because it is expensive but because of the time in a persons’ life that they would receive a diamond. People give or receive diamonds for engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and other special occasions. They can be purchased at jewelery stores in Colorado Springs that are diamond dealers. Diamonds are expensive so it is important to know what to look for when deciding to purchase a diamond. There are Four C’s to take into consideration when purchasing a diamond.

Color

Diamonds are graded on a scale that ranges in color from D-Z with D being the lightest color. This is a scale that was created by the Gemological Institue of America to determine the quality of a diamond. The lighter the color the diamond is, the better quality it is.

Cut

There are many different cuts of a diamond. Round is the most popular cut as far as shape and most common but cut also is how the facets of the diamond interact with light. Different cuts of diamonds unleash light in different ways. There is a 5 grade scale ranging from excellent to poor that grades the cut of a diamond.

Clarity

Diamond clarity is the physical appearance of the diamond. This could be anything from surface defects to internal inclusions and blemishes on the diamond that make the diamond not shine as bright. The clarity is broken down into 11 grades with a perfect diamond being called “flawless” or an “FL” grade. A diamond with many flaws and inclusions is graded as an “I” for “Included”.

Carat

Carat in a diamond is the weight and size of the stone. Often times if the diamond is less than a carat, it is referred to in points. For example, if a diamond is half of a carat, it may be called a fifty pointer. The better the color, cut, and clarity and the larger the carat makes the diamond more expensive.

After making a decision on the four c’s, the jewelery stores in Colorado Springs can help with solidifying the purchase. They will often show several diamonds to choose from and help you be confident in the decision that is made. Visit us at the store in Colorado Springs for more details.
