There are many different reasons why anyone may decide to obtain a permit for concealed carry in Minnesota. Understanding the reasons why you are choosing to obtain a permit is important as this can also help you determine which handgun is the best option for your specific needs.

If you are considering taking a class to obtain a permit for concealed carry in Minnesota there is no prerequisite that you have experience with guns or handguns. In fact, many people that take the course are first time gun owners and the course instructors will provide very specific information on all aspects of gun ownership, especially when it comes to firearm safety.

You can, in the state of Minnesota, have a handgun within your residence, including a rental home or apartment, without the need to have a permit for concealed carry. In Minnesota you can also transport a handgun in your vehicle without a permit provided it is unloaded and in a fully enclosed case while in your vehicle and out of your residence. If you want to carry the handgun loaded you will need to have a permit.

Purchasing Handguns

If you are not a current holder of a permit for concealed carry in Minnesota and you want to purchase a handgun you have to apply through the sheriff’s office for a permit to purchase. This includes going through a background check before the permit is issued.

For those that have a current and valid permit the added step of applying to the sheriff for a permit to purchase does not apply.

Who Cannot Get a Permit?

There are some people that will not be able to obtain a permit for concealed carry in Minnesota. This typically applies to people that have been convicted of a felony criminal charge with violence, even violence without a weapon, anyone registered as a predatory offender or anyone that is considered by the sheriff’s office processing the application to be a danger to self or others.
