Anyone who has struggled with back problems knows that back pain can “throw a wrench” into everyday activities and events. If you are one of these individuals, then you also probably know that back pain tends to “flare up” unexpectedly, leaving you potentially immobilized for long periods of time. Even visits to orthopedic specialists and chiropractors may require long recovery periods; sometimes all of the medicine in the world can’t help as much as a lengthy rest period. If you have been diagnosed with chronic back pain and have been instructed to rest and recover for days, weeks, or even months, then you are not alone. Read the tips below to learn how you to better cope during the back pain recovery process.

Tip One: Relax
A little rest and relaxation goes a long way when you are healing. If you are a “go-get-‘em” type of person and like to stay busy all of the time, then the concept of resting for an extended period may cause you to cringe. You are not the only one who has trouble slowing down. After a week or two of recovery, many patients neglect the doctor’s orders and undo the hard work completed by orthopedics specialists and chiropractors. They cannot remain disciplined enough to simply allow the injured parts to rest. In this case, the part of you that needs rested is your back. However, the good news is, even active people can enjoy themselves during the recovery process without harming their physical progress. Take up a few new hobbies to help get rid of your back pain for good:
* Read a good book or two (or 42). Rest your back and gain “book smarts” at the same time by pulling out a copy of a classic book you have never read. You may be surprised by how quickly the hours fly by when you are reading a good book.
* Play video games with your kids. If you have never played Mario Kart, then now is the perfect time to learn. Even if you do not have your own kids, you can probably find some kids who are willing to teach you! Video games are more fun than grown-ups give them credit for.
* Sketch. Have you been meaning to cultivate your inner artist? Perfect. Grab a pretty sketchbook or journal and start doodling. You will be glad you did.

Tip Two: Be Social
As the old saying goes, “time flies when you are having fun”. Nothing says “fun” like hanging out with friends and family. This tip is especially important for individuals who are extroverted and both process and gain energy by talking to and interacting with other people. Engaging in the community around you can be done from your own living room. Invite over an elderly individual who needs a friend. Ask someone to come twice a week and give you the Spanish lessons you have always wanted to take. Tip Three: Think Happy Thoughts
Be positive and confident about your recovery. If you approach recovery with the right attitude, you will heal faster and more effectively than if you approach recovery with a poor attitude.
