So you have decided to start surfboard lessons in Charleston, SC. Now what? As a beginner you have no idea what to expect, right? What did you just sign up for? Here are 5 things to better prepare you.
1. Prepare
Surfing is a physical activity, and there is nothing else exactly like it. However, you can prepare yourself. You should be comfortable in the water and swimming. Swimming, though it is not used much in surfing, it will help to build your endurance. You will be paddling roughly 54% of the time, keep this in mind as well. Yoga or running can help prepare you as well. Any exercise that gets your heart rate up will be beneficial in helping prepare you.
2. Don’t rush out of the white water.
You are a beginner, don’t feel obligated to go right out and catch the first wave. You want to get a good feel for your surfboard and how to properly handle it. This is learned in the white water. As you get better at controlling your board and become more comfortable, then you can proceed out.
3. You will fall in the water.
This is a certainty. You will also gulp mouthfuls of seawater and get it up your nose as well. No surfer is free from this! When you do fall, stay relaxed. To protect yourself, from your surfboard, even after you have surfaced, cover your head. Try counting to 10 while focusing on finding your board, which is attached to your ankle.
4. Enjoy Yourself
Surfing is difficult, though it is a lot of fun! Don’t worry about how you think you should look or what other people are doing. Enjoy your time on your board and in the ocean.
5. Don’t forget safety!
The ocean is a beautiful place, but it can also be dangerous. Familiarize yourself with rip currents. Know how to spot one and remember to paddle or swim parallel to the shore to get out of one.
Now that you know some basics, you can go and have a fun time at your surfboard lessons in Charleston, SC!
