Every AR15 or other AR rifle model is going to come with a stock charging handle. These are a relatively simple component of any rifle, but they do play an essential role.
To help to clarify the importance of this part, a quick review of the role of the handle will be helpful. It is found on the top of the weapon, actually above the bolt carrier. It looks like a simple T-style handle, at least with the stock component. Different models and styles can extend further back behind scopes, which may make a difference in how a shooter will operate the handle.
How to Use
Any type of charging handle from the stock component to an aftermarket option is essential to pull the bolt to the rear and open the action. When the handle is released, it is pushed forward by a spring, pulling a round from the magazine into the chamber.
At the same time, the handle pops back into the locked position ready for the next time it is required. The stock type of handle has the latch release on the left side, which can make it challenging for some shooters. The latch release also tends to be small, which can be a problem for hunting or target practice in cold weather when shooters are wearing heavier gloves.
Options to Consider
One option to consider with a replacement aftermarket charging handle is to choose a handle with a larger release latch or with release latches on both sides of the handle. This makes it a more practical device when the weapon is in all positions.
Different options in the handles themselves that allow for what is known as palm charging, where there is no need to hook the fingers under the T to pull back. This style makes it easier to operate the handle and also prevents pinching the fingers between the handle and the weapon.
