Making final arrangements in advance is one of the most important things anyone can do for loved ones. This last act of kindness ensures the family does not have go through the trial of trying to figure out what the deceased loved one would have preferred, and provides them with more time to grieve. While it’s great that the individual has arranged for a Cremation in Tacoma in advance, there’s still the matter of deciding what to do with the urn after the memorial service. One solution is to inter the urn in a columbarium.

What is a Columbarium?

In a sense, a columbarium is a mausoleum where there are spaces set aside for the placement of cremation urns. The designs vary greatly, but most will include niches that are the ideal size for a standard urn. It’s not unusual for those niches to be spaced so there is room for some type of nameplate below or to the side of each one, and even a shelf or other provisions for placing flowers next to the niche. The structure may be devoted completely to final resting places for the urns, or the space can be shared with coffins and vaults.

Family mausoleums originally built to accommodate coffins only can be altered to include one wall that is devoted to creating niches for urns. This approach makes it possible for those who do not want to be cremated but are not crazy about being buried in the ground to be laid to rest above ground. There is also no need to build a separate structure since the vaults containing the caskets can be arranged within the structure while the urns occupy the niches found in one of the walls.

Why This Setting?

Choosing to place the urn in a columbarium is an ideal alternative when there is no desire to scatter the ashes and family members would prefer to not have the urn at home. There is still a place to go and remember the deceased that is often a comfort to those who are left behind.

When considering options for Cremation in Tacoma, don’t overlook the choice of where the urn will reside in the future. Including instructions for placement will further ensure loved ones have one less decision to make during a time when they feel the most vulnerable.
