Renting a car gives you a number of handy benefits. You can get to where you want to go right away. No need to wait around for a trusty cab. No more haggling with drivers. You get behind the wheel and drive off any time you want. Sounds great? Here are 5 things you should know, though, before you get a car for rent in Costa Rica:

Know your policy inside and out

Some car rental companies might not offer collision coverage. So before you take the wheel, make sure you have your bases covered by reviewing your policy. If anything happens, you’ll have the assistance you need.

Know travel policies

Where do you want to go? Your car rental might have a few restrictions or fees if you drive out of state, says Nationwide. So read up on that before you plan on doing that road trip.

Top up your gas

Rental companies will charge astronomical fees for refiling the tank. Spare yourself the extra expense by sampling swinging by the gas station and doing this on your own.

Inspect the car

Before driving off with a car for rent in Costa Rica, check the interiors first. Lingering bad smells, stains and dirt on the seats, even trash on the floor—if you see any of these, you might want to renegotiate for a different car. If you see any scratches, make sure to point this out as well so you don’t get charged for them later on.

Bring your own car seat

Extras can add to your rental charges. If you want to keep your rental costs low, bring along your own car seat or plug your phone to the car and use its GPS function. Just make sure you protect your personal information by clearing it from the system before you return the car.
