For some it is money, for others it is positive affirmations and for others it might just be positive thinking and support. Coaches have to learn to understand what is motivating someone in order to continue to keep that motivation going.

*   There is always more: A coaches clients will be capable of achieving more in their lives even if they don’t see it. Therefore a coach must believe that no matter how successful someone already appears or even how low someone seems in their lives. They will always be capable of achieving more.

*   Letting go of the past: A good professional life coach knows that a person’s past is no indication of their future.

*   Self Belief: Life coaches have to teach people that if they believe it they can do it and provide full support to help them achieve it.

*   Objective and Supportive: Some coaches do not see that their role is only to support and guide not to criticize. A professional life coach must always be on the side of their client even if what they are telling them seems ridiculous or wrong. Remaining objective and asking the right questions will allow clients to discover their flaws and learn to improve. A coaches’ dedicated support allows them to have the confidence to do so.

*   Confidentiality: Coaches must understand that everything they share with a client must remain confidential to keep their client’s trust.

*   Honest Assessment: A professional life coach must be able to identify situations where their help will not be enough. If a coach sees they cannot meet the needs of a client they are obligated to tell them so in order to free them to seek the help they really need.
